Living Room Update

Ta-da!  Here is our updated living room. I have been holding out on showing you this room. It has been done since, oh, May? I just haven't taken pictures. How sad is that?

Yesterday, the boys were outside playing, I was waiting on my dough to rise so I could make homemade tortillas, and I happen to walk in the living room. It was half way picked up and the light just seemed right to take some pics. I moved the few toys that were scattered, put the pillows and throws on the couches real quick like, and started taking pics. Just a few minutes later the sun had moved and I no longer had to right lighting. I only got ONE picture that was decent. So guess what? You get one picture. But, I will take more.

Waaaaay back in January, I showed you updated pictures of our living room. It really has come a long way since we moved in two and a half years ago.

Then in February, I revealed the media cabinet update. I painted the cabinets a nice glossy white and updated the back of the of the shelves with a nice grayish, tealish, blue.

I thought I was done.

Then, I came across the deal of the century on a couch and loveseat on craigslist. I was looking for a loveseat for the den, but the guy wouldn't separate the set. I had wanted new living room furniture eventually, but this deal was way too good to pass up.

This new furniture setup is much more comfortable for our family. Definite win.

Did you notice that the new couch and loveseat are almost the exact same color that I had JUST painted the  back of the media center with? If I liked super matchy, the color would have been fine, but it was way too much of one color for me. I had the hardest time landing on a new accent color. I chose coral, but if I am being honest, I'm still not convinced it is the right color for this room. I liked it initially, but the longer it has been there, the more unsure of it I become. It just doesn't seem quite right, but I'm still not sure what would be better.

Suggestions for a new paint color are welcome in the comments. Please help!

In the mean time, I will work on getting some more detailed pics of the living room to share.

Don't HATE the Ceiling Fan!

I had big plans of changing out the ceiling fan for something like a a drum pendant, but then Summer in South Alabama hit. It is HOT. This is the first time that we have lived in a 2 story house and we are finding that using a ceiling fan is necessary. SO, I decided that instead of replacing the ugly thing, I'd see if I could give it a make over.

Here is what it looks like now. After a coat of primer and oil rubbed bronze spray paint. I flipped the blades over to the the side with a darker wood tone, and voila, a new ceiling fan.

I'm still not a big fan of the ceiling fan in general, but this one doesn't bother as much as it did.

Here is a sneak peek at what I have been working on.

Happy Friday.

Breakfast Room Before and After

Here is a look at our new breakfast room. Complete with a new table. Let's take a look back at what we started with and how we got to here.

The first thing that we did was paint over the wallpaper. You can read here about why we chose to paint over it instead of strip it. The next thing that had to be done was get rid of the ugly, dirty, copper blinds. I wasn't sure what I wanted so I chose not to spend much $ until I figured it out. I needed privacy and the copper blinds gone. I purchased a rod from Target and a table cloth that was on clearance. I cut the tablecloth in half (sewed up the edges), and used clips to hang it. I spent under $30 for this window and the window above the kitchen sink.

The next thing that had to be addressed was the lighting. The chandelier in the before picture got made over and moved to the dining room. This brass chandelier was in the front closet begging for a makeover of it's own. I knew that I didn't want to go as bold on this chandelier, so I painted it Oil Rubbed Bronze, and left the crystals off. I like how simple it looks.

And that is the story of the breakfast room.

over the kitchen sink

I can't say that I have ever been a fan of fluorescent lights. This is 1 of 2 in my kitchen.
I wasn't sure what I wanted to replace it with, but my husband called to tell me that he noticed some pendant lights on clearance at Lowes for $6 each. I told him to bring them home.
(I have plans for the shade of the other light)

Much better.
It's nice to have an electrician for a husband.

This little guy has nothing to do with the kitchen light.
He's just cute.
