Lighting

You will probably notice that when I post pics of our house I try my best to avoid the overhead lighting in my pictures. There is a good reason. All of the overhead light fixtures in the house are U G L Y!

This is my personal fav. I mean really. A florescent light fixture is bad enough, but the ceiling fan right next to it?

This one will get a makeover. (I'm actually really excited about this one.)

This one is just a typical brass/wood ceiling fan. Not pretty, but certainly not the ugliest ceiling fan in this house. Did you notice the bead/safety pin thing on the pull chain. Nice.

As you can see we have our work cut out for us in the lighting department. My question to you is what is your favorite type of  fixed light source?  Do you like chandeliers, recessed lighting, a drum pendant, something more builder grade, or something very unexpected. I know that my favs change depending on the room, but I think they all have their place.

We have some ideas about how we are going to address these light issues, but I'd like to hear your suggestions as well. Talk to me.

  1. Yeah, I have to say that ceiling fan next to the florescent light is going to be a challenge. Can't wait to see what you come up with! I know it will be great!

  3. I can't believe the builders of your house put a ceiling fan right next to a fluorescent light... What on earth??

  4. Def. recessed lighting for me. Although, I guess your right about the room. I think it depends on whether it is a bedroom or gathering room. In a large room I am going recessed lighting all the way, baby!

Why yes! Yes I did! It reminded me of the stylish barrettes I wore in third grade. :)

I'm a fan of recessed and pendant lighting, although I have neither in my house. Our house was built in the '80s (during the time I was rockin the aforementioned barrettes), and apparently all interior lighting was crappy back then. I've replaced a lot of the fixtures and priced out recessed lighting, but the kitchen and den alone were going to be $2,000. No can do.

  6. We have some less than great light fixtures in our house as well, that I hope to tackle soon. In our living room we have a ceiling fan that is currently broken so I'm deciding on what to replace it with a simple light fixture or another fan. Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

  7. I love ceiling fans but not next to that light... I like recessed lighting in rooms and I really like dimmers on them. I also like chandeliers.

  8. I like a little of everything. We love our recessed lighting in the kitchen and I have a soft spot for drum shades.
