Big Boy Room - Progress

This room has been in the works for a LONG time. Like, a really long time. This room was initially Cade's room when we first moved it.

I really liked this room when it was Cade's. The room was pretty classic with a little bit of Super Hero thrown in. We never did get around to building the day bed for the room before he inherited the
furniture from his great-grandmother that was the starting point for switching rooms. The new furniture would not fit in this room. The layout just wasn't right.

Right after Cade's room was done I had plans to work on Henry's room, but when he switched rooms with Cade I really didn't want to redo the room that was just finished. Henry was excited about it, so it stayed like this. Ok, so it wasn't exactly like this. Henry has a long dresser, so the bed didn't stay centered on this wall, It was moved to the left and the dresser was on the right. It stayed like this for way longer than I care to admit.

Back in December I was looking through one of the local buy, sell, trade sites on Facebook, and came across someone selling a car themed quilt, sheets, lamp, bank, curtains, wall canvas, curtain panels, a sham, and 2 car shaped pillows that were from Target.  There was also a striped potter barn rug. I showed the picture to Henry just to see if he liked it. He liked it, but I wasn't sure that was what I wanted to do. Well, it turns out the every single time I asked Henry what he wanted for Christmas, his  response was, " I want the car room stuff." He left me no choice, I had to scoop it up. I was just thankful that it was still available. I wrapped every bit of it up and put it under the Christmas Tree. It is still his favorite thing that he got.

He didn't let me waste any time putting it in his room. Before the day was over his bed was made and the curtains were hung. I was still procrastinating on extending the rectangle to a stripe, but I tackled it this weekend. It ended up being really easy, and didn't take very long at all. I'm not sure why I put it off so long.

The headboard was a Craigslist find.

The angry bird is Henry's personal touch. He made me cut it out of a candy box.

Henry's reading corner is one of my favorite spots. The little red rocker was my mom's when she was a little girl. Henry had always been a rocker, so she wanted him to have it. Before she passed away I wanted to have it recovered, but now I'm not sure that I can do it.

This spot needs some updating. It won't be anything major, but I have a few changes in mind.

The room is mostly done, but there are still a few things on my to do list.

To Do List
-art for above the bed (diy?)
-art for above the dresser (diy?)
-update the accessories on the wall shelves
-exchange the light/ceiling fan for a new one

The most important thing is how much this little man likes his "car room".

Hey Batter Batter - Free Printables

The past two weeks have felt like a whirlwind of scattered projects. I am trying to get my junk together so that I can start sharing them, but I have been ALL over the place. I have projects going in just about every. single. room. in our house! Yikes!

Cade's room has been on my radar. His room is a mix of antique furniture that was inherited last year from his great grandparents, and a sea of  navy blue and tan. He was given a really cool light up sign that has his name with a baseball and bat. I wasn't planning to do a themed room for him, but it seems to keep creeping in that direction in the accessory department. I'm okay with it. It will be easy and inexpensive to change out a few accessories when the next phase hits.

I wanted something really simple to hang above his dresser, so I just created a few prints that I can stick in a frame.  I will get these printed tomorrow while I'm out running errands. He hasn't seem them yet, but I think he will like them.

Feel free to use them for your own personal use. Just right click and save to your computer.

Cade's New Room - The Bedding

Last week I mentioned that the boys were switching bedrooms and that I would be redoing Cade's room. He wanted as much yellow as possible in the room. I wasn't so sure. I found a comforter on line that I thought might work. I mentioned maybe adding Batman to the mix to make it look a little bit more little boy. You are now caught up.

I spent the week in Birmingham with my mom, so I didn't do anything else with the room until Saturday morning when I got home. I spent the morning working on getting everything cleaned up, closets moved, and just getting everything ready for my husband to move the furniture in on Saturday afternoon. Once the bed and everything was in, Cade and I headed to Target to look at the bedding. I was planning to just look and start formulating a plan. The yellow bedding was a no go, the white was actually very cream and not as crisp looking as I would have liked. We looked and looked, not really agreeing on much.

Then I came across this set. Now first, let me just say that I am NOT a bed in a bag  kind of girl, but I really like the colors and pattern and it really just made this very simple. Right now, simple is good. I remembered seeing it on line, but not liking it at all. In person it was very different. Cade immediately liked it. It was a win win. Cade was happy and Mama got the original navy blue that I like so much.Oh, and NO MORE SUPERHEROES! :)

I have to say that his room looks very grown up right now. Wood furniture, navy and gray bedding, khaki walls. It's time to start adding a little color to the room. His nightstand is already yellow, and I am planning to work that in as one of  the accent colors.  They other thing we both agreed on was not to go theme-y with this room. I was so happy to here Cade say that he didn't want a theme. I plan to bring in some white, a little yellow, and possibly paint the room light gray. I won't decide on the painting part until I get new curtains and decide if it is necessary. If it isn't, I want mess with it.

This is the fabric that I am leaning towards for the curtains. I think that the white background will add some brightness that the room needs. It is feeling a little dark.

As far as artwork goes, I think we are going to rework some of the canvases that we already have and see what we come up with. I'm thinking something striped with a monogram for over the bed and maybe a bulletin board over his dresser/desk and then something framed over his chest of drawers.

What have you been working on? Anyone else get new furniture that created another project?

A Batman Room?

If you have been reading this blog for any length of time, you know that when we moved last year we kept Cade's room mostly classic with a hint of Superman. Henry's room is still mostly the same as his original nursery from the previous house. I have been thinking that it would be fun to do something a little different for Henry, but had know idea what.

Last week, we found out that my husband's grandmother is moving and she offered us her original bedroom suite. It's beautiful, and will make a great set for Cade. The furniture won't fit quite right in Cade's room so the boys are swapping rooms. First of all, they are both SUPER EXCITED! Henry is so excited that he is getting Cade's stuff. He is in that stage of wanting everything he has to be like Cade's, so we are keeping the room mostly as is. We will have to move Heny's dresser into his new room, move the armoire into the playroom as a school cabinet, and move the bed to a different location to accommodate his large dresser, but overall the room will be mostly the same.

Cade is now excited that we get to redo his room, AGAIN! The problem is he always wants everything in his current fav color. I say current because it changes quite frequently. What is his fav right now? Yellow.

At first I wasn't sure that to think about yellow. I like yellow, it happens to be my one of my favs, but I knew that when Cade suggested it he was thinking LOTS of yellow, not as an accent. I was thinking, lets work with mostly navy and white and then add in whatever color he wants. Nope, he didn't like that idea. I want his room to reflect him, but I also don't want to redo it again in 6 months.

I have zero bedding that will fit a full size bed so we will be starting from scratch. I started looking through the bedding at Target on line and Cade picked this yellow comforter. I wasn't sure if it was right for a 6 year old boy, but the more I looked at it, the more I liked it. I really like the geometric pattern, it looks like it's gray on the other side, and the price is great.

He's six and I don't want his room to grow up too fast, (this comforter doesn't look classic little boy to me) so I suggested we add a touch of Batman! He liked the idea, so that is the plan for now. (unless I come across something else that seems to fit him better.) I will keep the Batman to a minimum. It will be brought in through DIY artwork. Something that will make an impact, but also be fast-easy-cheap to replace.

The room itself is currently khaki, so it looks like I will most likely be repainting the room. GRRR! The good news is that we painted our room a very pale gray, and I have quite a bit left so I shouldn't have to purchase anymore paint. The curtains will also have to be changed since they are brown. I'm thinking a dark gray, maybe a solid, maybe a pattern. We'll see. I haven't planned out all of the details just yet, but I feel like we are off to a good start.

We aren't moving the new furniture in until this weekend, so I will spend this week trying to get everything switched around and reorganized. Cade will be losing all of his shelves that he uses to display all of  his stuff so this could get interesting.

Superhero Bedroom

Do you remember me showing you the plans of Cade's room? No, that could be because it was over a year ago. Seriously, that is bad. I do have to tell you that this room has been done for many months, I just didn't take pictures right away and then forgot that I didn't tell you about it. That, is bad.

This was actually a very fun room to do. Cade really wanted navy walls, but I knew that that would be too dark. When I put the inspiration board together I mentioned that I was going to do a navy accent wall. I changed my mind. I ended up painting a navy rectangle almost the length of his bed to create a focal point. I painted it high enough so that one do when he actually has a bed, as apposed to a mattress on the floor, it should still be a the right height.

Everything is nice and classic with a touch of superhero. When he decides that something else is cooler than Superman, the art work will be simple to change.

I took 3 frames that I had, painted the back piece of the frame navy, and used Mod Podge to adhere the "art" to the back piece that was painted. The buildings are pieces of scrapbook paper cut to size (I used paint for the windows), the Superman emblem was a black and white coloring sheet I printed out and painted, and the Pow was also cut from scrapbook paper. Super easy. Lesson - kid art doesn't have to be elaborate or expensive.

The windows had ugly Auburn blinds that needed to be replaced, so I made faux shades. I found the navy and white striped outdoor fabric at Hancocks and hemmed all four sides to fit the window. I made the length about 18" longer than I needed so that I could draped the fabric across tension rods and then insert the rods at the top of the window. I didn't need the shades to be able to open and close, I just wanted to be able to block out more sun light, so this option is working very well for us.

Maybe one day I will get around to showing you the little guys room.

Little Boy Room Plan

My son Cade is ready for me to get to his room. When we first moved in he liked the wallpaper that was in his room. I knew that it couldn't stay, but told him that we could do his room last instead of first so that he could enjoy it for as long as possible. That didn't last long. He is officially ready to see the wallpaper go. I however, am not quite ready to tackle his room, but have been working on the plan.

Cade has pretty strong opinions about how he wants his room to look, so he had a lot of input. We are going to use his current quilt (no longer available from Company Kids) and red tap top curtain panels (I think they were purchased from Wal-Mart, but I couldn't find them online).

Cade has talked about navy walls for months. His furniture is navy, so I'm not willing to go navy all the way, but I am going to give him a navy accent wall. We really wants it, so I'm going to make it work. The other walls will be a nice nuetral.

The window with get navy/white striped shades with red curtain panels. Let's hope my sewing skills don't let me down.

There will also be some artwork, but I don't have the details just yet. You can be sure that they will be DIY'ed.

I'm not big on theme(y) kid rooms, but Cade is into super heroes so we are going to bring in some Superman per his request. It will of course be done tastefully and easy to change has his interests change.

I have a lot of other projects to finish up before I can tackle this, but I am happy to have a plan and look forward to getting started.

Here is the before picture of his room. This was before we moved in and before the carpet was replaced. The carpet was horrible. I was so happy to see it go.
